A sleep association is something that your child associates with falling asleep. These are usually purposefully used to create a positive association with sleep, for example, white noise, or a sleeping bag, allowing your child to learn that sleep is approaching when these are turned on, or they are placed into their sleeping bag. There are also sleep associations that can become accidental and then can turn into a troublesome association, such as being rocked to sleep, needing to be patted to sleep or breast/bottle fed back to sleep at each waking. Do you know that there are 5 sleep regressions during your child’s first 2 years? So, what do each of these regressions look like, when will they appear, and how can you identify the symptoms? ✖ Each sleep regression can come at different stages for each individual baby, especially those associated with developmental milestones. There are 5 that occur between 4-24 months. ✖ The 4 month sleep regression is usually the most tricky regression, and sees parents begin to get in contact with us due to their 'perfect little sleeper' seeing a breakdown with their usual naps and sleep. Settling, sleep and your baby’s hormones and development changes from around 4 months of age as their sleep cycles and sleep hormones begin to mature, and become more adult like. Cue the 4 month sleep regression around this time, and a big neurological leap!! So how can we work towards ensuring your sleep doesn’t break down in this time? The stages from newborn through to 12 weeks is an ever changing period, your baby’s needs change every week or so around sleep, awake time thresholds, feeding times and demands - especially during those little growth spurts!
